Two weeks after claiming gold in the Bronze division at the BNCC Can-Am Blizzard Bash in Buffalo, New York, the 17U Black team was at it again on Jan 23rd winning gold at the OVA McGregor Cup in Stouffville.
With a mix of strong serving and great net play, the team was able to collect two victories over the ACTS Elites (25-18, 25-19) and Wildcats (25-17, 25-20), resulting in taking first in their pool and a bye to the quarter-finals.
During the quarterfinals, they faced the Bluewater Blizzard. After a much needed break, our Hurricanes were able to come out well-rested and focused. This enabled them to secure a solid victory, 25-13 and 25-14.
This momentum was carried over to the semifinals, where they came out on top, winning 25-16 and 25-11 over the Storm Cyclones.
Then it was on to the finals, where they played the Northern Chill. During the first set, the team was able to walk away with a 25-14 victory behind some solid blocking and excellent serving. For the second set, they struggled from the start and fell behind early. However, with a strong team effort, the team was able to claw back only to be defeated, 25-22. With the momentum generated in the previous set, our 17U Black team was able to prevail 15-9 over the Northern Chill and take home the gold.
